Hygge: creating coziness

Hygge is a concept I have been hearing about for years. I still remember the first time I saw an article about it and had a moment of clarity that this is how I strive to live my life. At it’s core it is coziness and the appreciation of cozy. For those unfamiliar with the term, the definition according to Oxford Dictionary is: “A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).”

If you want to learn more, who better than from the author of The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking, who also happens to be the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Denmark.

If you would rather skim then let me break down my favorites points from the video. Meik refers to Hygge as being conciously cozy. Some other quotes that stood out to me are ‘the art of creating a nice atmosphere’, ‘pursuit of everday happiness’, and ‘savoring pleasures.’ He observes that Denmark often places first for happiness.

My takeaway is that you can find Hygge in many things. It can be a hot drink in a coffee shop surrounded by chatter and shared pastries, or curled up in a blanket watching a movie, or surrounded your friends and family enjoying a meal. I love that you can create Hygge no matter your means or location, just by taking to time to enjoy the things around you and the simple pleasure that bring a sense of cozy contentment.
