Slow Living Tips for the End of Summer

The end of summer is almost here and I’m wondering one thing: where did the time go? Looking back, the past few months were characterized by busyness. Preoccupied with rushing from one thing to the next, I didn’t make room for the little things. Now, I’m starting to see the importance of slowing down.

September feels like the perfect time to shift my mindset. I want to feel in control of my time and how I spend it. I want to be more present. That’s why this month, between savoring the last of the sunshine and warm weather, I’m committing to a few simple slow living tips.

What is Slow Living?

If you aren’t familiar with the term slow living, it’s often described as a reflective and purposeful approach to daily life. It’s a great way to rediscover the little things you often miss when you’re in a hurry. While slow living means something different to everyone, the following quote from The Art of Stillness by Pico Iyer paints a clear picture of the concept: “In an age of speed, I began to think, nothing could be more invigorating than going slow. In an age of distraction, nothing can feel more luxurious than paying attention.”

You don’t have to make drastic changes to benefit from this concept, just incorporate a few simple practices into your usual routine.  Slow living is all about doing things intentionally and creating a healthy balance in your life.

Develop Daily Rituals

One way to find more slowness in your day is by adopting a relaxing ritual. Daily rituals don’t have to cost money or be overly time-consuming. Simply prioritize an activity that you already enjoy but tend to skip or rush during the week.

Personally, I’m focusing on developing a morning coffee routine. While I love coffee, I don’t leave myself time to drink it before work. Instead, I typically pour my morning cup straight from my single-serve coffee maker into my thermos. But I’ve come to realize that rushing through my morning only sets me up to feel rushed throughout my day.

Lately, I’ve been making pour-over coffee and sitting down to drink it. Prioritizing ten minutes of me-time in the morning sets the tone for the whole day. And sipping from a cute enamel mug makes the experience even better!

Spend Time Outside

Getting outside is a great way to feel calmer and more balanced. When you’re in nature, you have a chance to slow down and appreciate the little things. Next time you’re outside, take an extra moment to smell the fresh air and feel the sun on your skin.

Though I’m sad to see August go, September weather is perfectfor spending time outdoors. The intense heat of summer is on itsway out, and it isn’t going to snow anytime soon. Revel in the transitional weather by sitting on your patio, visiting your local park, or going somewhere a bit more off the beaten path.

Try Gratitude Journaling

Studies have shown that you can lower your stress levels through gratitude journaling. Gratitude journaling involves writing down the positive things that are happening in your life and why these things make you happy. I’ve been writing in my journal a few times a week for several weeks, and it has helped me readjust my attitude and gain clarity on what I appreciate.

Plan to write in your journal at a frequency that works for your lifestyle. Some people may find it a chore to write every night. In that case, try sitting down for 15 minutes every few days. Your writing doesn't have to be deep; a simple bullet list can give you the same benefits as a lengthy paragraph. As with most slow living practices, the most important thing is to give it a shot.
